ottershawscouts.jpgThis was the scene at a recent gathering of the 1st Ottershaw Scouts where local beat bobby Anita Clarke presented pack and leaders with a cheque for £235.

The group is planning its activities and is actively recruiting adults and children. To find out about the opportunities read on...

Following the successful re-opening of 1st Ottershaw Otters (Tuesday night cub pack) in September, the group now boasts 2 Cub packs, a Beaver colony and a Scout troop.

Beavers cover the ages of 6 to 8, Cubs 8 to 10 ½ and Scouts 10 ½ to 14 years old. After 14, children progress to Explorer Scout Units that are co-ordinated and organised at District level.

The Cub packs have participated in numerous activities - from fire lighting to book reading, from scientist badge to assault courses and making cards for both Mothers Day and Valentines Day. We also covered some more traditional aspects of Scouting such as map reading, first aid, knots and tent pitching.

Trips to the fire station, a night at an athletics track, building bivouacs in the woods, road safety and home safety are just some of the other activities that have been done.

Visitors have included representatives from Oxfam, a wildlife visit, a New Zealand visit night and - as above - the local police.

All this and we have haven't even mentioned camping yet (it even stayed dry for the 1st weekend in June at Polyapes near Cobham!), or the service for Remembrance Day, or the St George's Day parade.
